Surviving Christmas: The 4 Gift Rule

Yes, this is a post about Christmas in September. No I am not completely off my rocker. I am a planner I do my best to get the majority of things done early so I can enjoy the real reason for the season.

I have been trying to get ideas from the girls so I can start stashing things I find on sale! We have a new plan this year…. we are scaling back gifts.

Last year I really thought I did well I think each kid had maybe 10 gifts from Mom and Dad, 1 from their sister, and then their ‘Santa’ gift. It still felt like too much.

This year I am making it MUCH easier. We are sticking to the 4 Gift Rule!

Something you:

  • Want
  • Need
  • Wear
  • Read

We are going to stick to this rule for adults too! I am really excited about this. I don’t have to fret about what I am going to buy. I have already some ideas going for the kiddos.

Munchkin (Age 4):

W: Magformers- These awesome squares/triangles ect. that you can build 3D shapes with!

N: A star ‘turtle’ in pink

W: A dress for her and her American Girl Doll (Purple and sparkly of course!)

R: This is up for debate… she is reading so maybe some ‘easy readers’

Peanut (Almost 2):

W: Her own ‘laptop’. She would LOVE something to ‘type’ on!

N: Still thinking!

W: Not sure!

R: Tag Jr. Reader and Books (we actually have these from Munchkin but she will LOVE them!)

So what is on your Christmas Lists?

Buffalo Chicken Stuffed Shells: These will change your life

So let’s be honest… I REALLY love Buffalo Chicken ANYTHING!!! Remember my Crockpot Buffalo Chicken ? Well this one is amazing chicken STUFFED in Pasta shells. I love pasta as much as I love Buffalo Chicken, maybe more!

This month I started doing some bulk cooking with a friend! We started using Once a Month Mom… You need to check her page out! This page is amazing! Her recipe said it could be adapted from Lasagna into Stuffed Shells. Since the dinner the night before was Crockpot Lasagna the thought of more Lasagna in the month was a no-go!

Dinner Time Battles

Why oh why have meals become such a battle?

Munchkin has been a great eater her whole life. Of course we have had our battles in the past. There was the point where I had thought we might have a vegetarian on our hands (nothing wrong with that !), and over time she started eating meat. We have had the nights where the Pasta Sauce was too spicy (despite it being the same brand she has had since UTERO!)

Our more recent battles have been that of ultimate proportions. One would think she might just want chicken nuggets and mac and cheese… nope not our issues. She will ask for her typical favorites for times when she can make choices (breakfast/lunch) and for dinner she gets the family meal. Almost every single meal is a debacle.

I have taken the approach of well…”Munchkin, if you aren’t hungry you don’t have to eat; however, you can have it for the next meal.” I mostly do this to avoid getting frustrated! Outside I do my best to be cool and calm… but on the inside this is making me insanely crazy!!!!!

Seriously, it doesn’t matter the meal; toast, pancakes, eggs, yogurt parfaits, pizza, chicken, hot dogs, pork chops, pasta…. ANYTHING! Now, I know what you might be thinking… maybe Mae gives her too many snacks? NOPE… NONE if she doesn’t eat a meal and usually she gets one a day. Some Veggie Straws, a few crackers, Pirate’s Booty, nothing super filling.

Rand McNally and I agreed that her clearing her plate wasn’t needed for every meal. Most times she takes a bite or 2 before saying she is full. Her milk is usually not even given to her until she has 4-5 bites.

We have decided if she refuses a meal she gets to see it at the next meal because I HATE to waste food! There are so many people who don’t have food at their disposal like we do. Usually by the next meal she is more willing to eat. I hate it though… I hate this BATTLE.

I am also fearful of what she is teaching Peanut. Peanut is already proving to be pickier then Munchkin was at this point. I have got to come up with something that makes meal times more enjoyable… for ALL of us.

Suggestions PLEASE!!!

A Mother’s Plea

It is almost 10 pm, both girls are asleep in their rooms and all I want to do is go in an apologize, hug them, and tell them I love you more then ANY phone call or text. Today a little 4 year old boy lost hid life and it appears that it was caused by his Mother who swerved into another lane while on her cell phone and hit a truck that had 3 men inside.

Though the details are still surfacing I am sitting her trying to cry for her, for their family, for the family of the 3 others who were in the oncoming car.

We heard the sirens today, saw the trucks flying down the road. I posted on my Facebook wall and was told that there was an accident. This accident has really made me think about life and how precious it is.

Munchkin is almost 4 so full of life, curiosity, and excitement for each day. I can not imagine what this Mother is feeling (or will feel when she is faced with the information of losing her child). No CALL -NO TEXT is worth it. I can not judge this Mother because I am guilty of taking phone calls ALL the time with out using a hands-free device. Hell, I even have Bluetooth in my VAN and yet I still answer and chat on the phone.

This.stops.NOW!

I am begging you… pleading that you do the same. Your children are more precious than the call. Remember 15 years ago or so… when no one really cared about talking to anyone until they were home. Nothing is more important then a human life. No sale at Target, no vent about your husband, no lunch date… NOTHING.

Please… stop using your phone while driving. Stop putting the people in your car and on the road around you at risk.

Leave your phone in your purse in the trunk or back seat if you can’t trust yourself. Turn it OFF. Invest in a hands-free device… there are TONS of options to make driving safer.

I am asking you to join me in this effort to honor this 4 year old child who lost his life today… let us do our part in protecting others and stop driving distracted.

Life is precious.. ditch the cell phone and drive.

My prayers go out to ALL involved in the crash this morning and to all the Firefighters, Medical Personnel, and Police on the scene.

Edited to make some corrections that of course were needed since I was an emotional basketcase when I wrote this last night!

My Baby Talks with her Hands

Before Munchkin was born I decided I wanted to use Baby Sign Language to help bridge the communication gap. I had NO clue how awesome the experience was going to be.

We started signing with Munchkin when she was about two weeks old. I know, it seems really early to start but we figured she was observing her surroundings why not start then! We only showed her the sign for milk every time she nursed. Which seemed like a 100 times a day!

Munchkin Signing 'Milk'

Around 4 months old we started feeding her purees. At this time we started showing her a couple more signs, ‘Eat’, ‘More’ and ‘All Done’. Repetition was key. I will give credit where credit is due, Rand McNally was AWESOME at remember to sign every single time!

Signing 'More' with her Princess Band Aid

When you teach signs you have to say the word as you sign it. This allows the child to hear the English word as well as seeing the Sign. Do not expect to see the signs from the child as exact copies of the actual sign. In fact, most of the signs are similar but never the same! The also depends on the age of the infant/toddler.

I was pretty sure we would never see a sign from her little baby hands. Then one day at Target of all places she was fussing in her carseat on the cart. We were at the check out and Rand McNally was watching her as I loaded the items on the belt. He said, “Mae, I think she is signing ‘eat’?!?!” I looked up and sure enough she was. It looked NOTHING like what I had been showing her but she kept touching her mouth. She was 6 months old! I couldn’t believe it. We gave her a cracker and that ended her fussing! She was talking to us… with her hands!!!

Showing her first Sign... 'Eat'

Slowly other Signs came into her vocabulary. By a about a year she was signing about a half dozen words and evening stringing some together. “More eat” was a favorite!

The sign for 'Water'

When Munchkin was about 7 months old we took a class taught by a certified Baby Signs Instructor. You can search here to find a class in your area. It was awesome because she could interact with other babies and I could interact with other Moms learning the same thing!  The teacher was awesome and she gave us great advice on how to incorporate signs into our normal daily routines.

One of my favorite lessons she taught us was to teach them signs that are motivating to them as well as the signs you want them to learn. Typically, those signs are like ‘Ball’, ‘Book’, or animal signs. Well for my crazy baby it was ‘Light’. Yes you read that correctly… ‘Light’. She would sign light anywhere and ALL.THE.TIME.

One time we were out at a restaurant and she signed ‘Light’ at ever single light fixture she could see! Each time she did we responded with “Yes, Munchkin that is a light!” and her face lit up! She was happy that we understood her. That is what Sign Language does… bridges communication between parents and babies!

Munchkin Signing 'Please'

Munchkin was very quick to talk. She had a ton of words and FAST! However, she would use her signs to clarify. This cut down on the screaming and crying. She also signed ‘please’ for a very long time. It was adorable!

We had such and awesome experience with Munchkin and Sign Language that we taught Peanut in a very similar fashion. She has also been able to communicate with us. She just turned a year a couple weeks ago. She can sign Milk, Eat, More, All Done, Water, Light, Please and Thank You.

You can start to teach your baby/toddler sign language at any point! So don’t think that you missed the boat if your baby is older!  Check out Baby Signs because they have a huge assortment of products that will help you get started. The products are awesome and I loved them and so do both the girls!
